The Building Societies Association has published new research into mortgage arrears. The research is based on a survey of mortgage borrowers that have been in arrears in the last two years, the results of which are combined with the results of a survey of building societies.

The research investigates:

• recent causes of arrears
• whether borrowers have repaid their arrears, and how
• what action borrowers took to avoid repossession, including;
• when borrowers first spoke to their lender
• whether borrowers sought independent advice
• the help offered to borrowers in arrears by their lender
• what borrowers thought about the treatment they received from their lender
• the implications of the above findings
