CEO, Building Societies Association

The Building Societies Association (BSA) is one of the most successful and influential trade bodies in the UK. The BSA represents all 42 UK building societies and 7 of the largest credit unions and has influential relationships with the UK Government, financial regulators, other trade bodies and mutual organisations.

This is a particularly exciting time for the mutual sector and the BSA. The building society movement celebrates its 250th anniversary this year, the sector is growing and the UK Government has pledged to double the size of the mutual sector. So there is considerable momentum in the sector and a tremendous sense of opportunity and expectation.

Role

The CEO is responsible for leading the BSA as an effective trade body, positively influencing policy and perceptions of the sector to improve its resonance and relevance for the benefit of existing and future members.

  • Championing building societies, credit unions and the wider financial mutual sector as an essential part of the future of UK financial services.
  • Maintaining and developing strong links with members and associates.
  • Leading on development and delivery of the BSA’s purpose and strategy, as approved by the BSA Council (board).
  • Leading and developing the BSA team and capabilities, to meet the current and future needs of members and the sector and overseeing the delivery of the commercial programme of events to support the sector and members.

Candidate

Capitalising upon the current momentum and opportunities for BSA members, will require a CEO who brings a high level of credibility and personal impact, both as leader and spokesperson for the sector. Equally, they will need to demonstrate the personal confidence, ambition and resilience to sustain the effort and leadership needed to be successful in the role.

Leading the BSA requires a wide range of skills and capabilities. These could have been developed in a range of different roles and organisations. Critically, potential candidates will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • Be the spokesperson and figure head for the BSA and mutual sector at the highest level, with Government, regulators and policy makers.
  • Understand and articulate the strategic context, opportunities and challenges for the sector.
  • Lead and develop multi-disciplinary teams and the organisation from a strategic, delivery and financial perspective.

As organisations committed to inclusion, diversity and fair opportunity, Odgers Berndtson and the BSA encourage interest and applications from all interested individuals with relevant experience and skills.
