Long-term strategy urgently needed to help homeowners decarbonise their homes

BSA comments ahead of the Public Accounts Select Committee evidence session into Decarbonising Home Heating.

Commenting ahead of the Public Accounts Select Committee evidence session into Decarbonising Home Heating, Paul Broadhead, Head of Mortgages & Housing at the Building Societies Association, said:

“Building societies are fully committed to helping homeowners decarbonise their homes, with a number of societies already offering green mortgages. However, take-up of these products and low-carbon heating systems has been extremely low. We urgently need the Government to deliver a comprehensive long-term strategy to tackle this issue and help boost consumer demand.

“Consumers are unclear about what work needs to be done on their homes, who to trust to advise them and whether Government support will be available.  Every day spent waiting for clear direction creates more uncertainty and delays consumers and industry from mobilising to meet the challenge.

“We need clarity from Government about what’s needed, what role the Government will play and what support will be available, so that consumers, businesses and investors can plan and work together to reach Net Zero."
