Mortgage lending
Mortgage lending in the first quarter of 2023 (January to March 2023):
Building societies approved 85,234 mortgage loans, a 36% share of the 239,804 mortgage loans approved across the market in the period. Gross mortgage lending by building societies was £13.9 billion, accounting for 24% of the £58.5 billion total mortgage lending in the UK during the period. Net mortgage lending by building societies (gross lending minus repayments) was £0.5 billion, a 132% share of total net lending across the market of £0.4 billion. This leaves building societies with outstanding mortgage balances of £370.0 billion at the end of March 2022, a 23% market share.

Savings
Household savings in the first quarter of 2023 (January to March 2023):
Savings balances at building societies increased by £8.5 billion, whereas balances fell by £4.7 billion across the market. Savings balances outstanding at building societies now stand at £362.1 billion, a 19% market share of the total £1,954.3 billion across the market.
